Ryan McCally, DVM, Diplomate, ACVS, is a board-certified surgeon in Tucson.
Dr. Ryan McCally is an Arizona native, having been born in Phoenix and grown up in Ahwatukee.
He attended Mountain Pointe High School where he was an All-State swimmer and baseball player. He continued playing baseball at Stanford University, where he played in four consecutive College World Series and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Human Biology and a Master’s degree in Biological Sciences.
After graduating from Stanford, he was a pitcher in the Tampa Bay Rays minor league system, playing for teams in Hudson Valley, NY; Charleston, SC; and Bakersfield, CA. After retiring from professional baseball, he earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 2010 from Washington State University.
Dr. McCally then completed an internship in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery at the University of Florida. He continued his surgical training with a one year surgical internship at Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists in Houston, TX, before starting a small animal surgical residency at the University of Missouri.
During his surgical training, Dr. McCally completed a research project investigating different methods of providing pain relief for dogs undergoing TPLO surgery.
He presented his results at the 2014 ACVS Symposium, and he earned an Outstanding Surgical Resident Award for his First Place Clinical Research presentation in the Small Animal Resident’s Forum.
Also in 2014, Dr. McCally received the honor of being inducted into the Mountain Pointe High School Hall of Fame. He completed his residency training in 2015, and he stayed at the University of Missouri for an additional year as a Clinical Instructor. Dr. McCally became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2016.
Dr. McCally’s surgical interests include arthroscopy, minimally invasive fracture repair, total hip replacement, and cardiothoracic surgery.
He has been fortunate to train with some of the pioneers and leaders of veterinary arthroscopy; minimally invasive fracture repair; total joint replacement; and angular limb deformity, and he looks forward to bringing his talents and expertise in these areas to the Tucson community.
In his spare time, Dr. McCally enjoys spending time with his wife, Ashley, and their daughter, as well as baseball, swimming, hiking, and golf.
